Parenthood has its joys and excitement. It can also make you extremely anxious and stressed, especially if you are a new parent.

Certain beliefs and myths add to the pressure that new parents are already facing. Ignoring these is the best way to make life simple and ensure your sanity remains intact.

Here are some parenting myths you should ignore if you are a new parent or about to become one:

1. Parenting books and guides will provide all answers.

I’ve seen people reading tons of books about parenting and still being clueless when they’re faced with a parenting challenge.

Whilst it’s good to be prepared, you can’t have all the answers.

There are some things only experience can teach you.

2. You’ll be the cute, happy family that is shown in movies and commercials.

I hate to break it to you but it’s not all fun and games. Parenting is a roller coaster ride with its ups and downs.

There will be times when sleepless nights and exhaustion will make you think what have I got myself in, but all of those are nothing compared to the happiness and joys of parenthood.

3. You have to be a perfect parent

Nope, nobody’s perfect. You can’t be at the top of your game at all times.

Cut yourself some slack and be kind to yourself.

4. Always trust reasoning and logic more than your parent’s instincts

A parent’s instincts are usually right, sometimes you have to trust your instincts.

5. Comparing your kid’s progress with other kids of the same age will help.

Although there are some general rules to guide you, it’s not advisable to make comparisons with other children.

Each child is different and will make progress at their own pace.
